What’s it like being a dad in the twenty-first century?
Every so often, I describe my thoughts and experiences. If you are a parent, soon will be, or like to read my take on it, this is what to read. Oh, and don’t laugh.
Today is Friday. Friday is my part-time day. Yes, I’m confident enough to admit I only work four days a week (on my day job). Actually, I think nobody should work five days a week; life’s too short to be stuck doing just one thing most of the time, which you might even hate. Let’s talk about part-time working.
Having a child has taught me a lot about myself, and the large rainbow range of emotions that I did not always know I had. I guess that’s both the pro and the con of being a parent.
This week, my daughter had her first swimming lesson. A quarter of the Netherlands is below sea level, and another quarter is prone to flooding by river. As a result, learning to swim is part of our culture. Still, when my four-year-old said ‘I can swim already, and I want to dive in the deep pool’ right before her first lesson, I found myself slightly worried.
It seemed like a year, but it was only eight weeks. Eight weeks ago the lockdown in the Netherlands came down, and this week it was eased. My daughter went back to school… well, back-ish.
